Let's Start From the Beginning
We were all packed and ready to go the night before but we didn't go to bed until about midnight, so we were in for a very long day of traveling. We, I really mean Glenn, stuffed the car to the maximum capacity the night before and were pretty proud of ourselves for being able to travel so lightly. The morning we left we loaded Rally in the car and made our way to Whataburger to have one last Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit for our breakfast on the road. They don't have Whataburgers in Washington. We hopped on the 10 and we were on our way.The plan for Day 1 of our travels was to leave Phoenix and make our way to Salinas, CA for our first stop. The total length of time we were in the car was approximately 11 hours, including stops, so that was surprisingly not bad for me. Once we got out of Southern California and began to make our way up to Northern California, the view got much more interesting and it rained to various degrees pretty much nonstop. I had never driven through this area of California before so I enjoyed staring out the window as Glenn dutifully drove. Everywhere seemed to be covered in beautiful green plants and there were vineyards EVERYWHERE!Somewhere along the way, just south of Bakersfield, we saw a sign that advertised Fresh Rainier Cherries so we just had to stop and grab some for a snack. Lucky for us they were only a few bucks a pound! That's a big difference considering the last time we got those kind of cherries at AJ's they were 10 dollars a pound! We also grabbed a small basket of black raspberries (SO GOOD) and a couple pieces of homemade fudge. Needless to say, our tummies were full and happy for pretty much the remainder of the trip.We finally made our stop for the day in Salinas at about 7:30 PM on Friday, June 5th. Phew! What a drive! I was so proud of myself for not complaining, at least not the whole way :o) Rally was also perfectly well behaved the whole way up and we were proud of him. We stayed in a Motel 6, another first for me I think. It wasn't a bad hotel and I was thoroughly amused by the silly bedspread. Thankfully they allow pets without any of those stupid extra charges. We grabbed some Little Caesar's pizza for dinner and then we were out for the night, exhausted after the long trip.
